[tʃ- - pla'to], Plateaulandschaft (durchschnittlich 500-800 m über dem Meeresspiegel) in Indien, in den Bundesstaaten Bihar und Madhya Pradesh, randlich auch in den Bundesstaaten West Bengal und Orissa, grenzt im Norden an die Gangesebene; reich an Bodenschätzen (etwa vier Fünftel der indischen Steinkohlenproduktion, außerdem Bergbau auf Glimmer, Bauxit, Eisen-, Kupfer-, Chrom-, Manganerze), zu einem Drittel bewaldet. Die frühere Lackgewinnung (Schellack) in den Wäldern ist stark zurückgegangen. Im Bereich von Jamshedpur, Rourkela und des Damodar befindet sich heute die größte zusammenhängende Industrieregion Indiens (v. a. Eisenhüttenindustrie).
